Article By Roberta Hestenes
"A Christian small group is an intentional face-to-face gathering of 3 to 12 people on a regular time schedule with the common purpose of discovering and growing in the possibilities of the
abundant life of Christ."
INTENTIONAL
The group member decides to be a part of a group, usually as a result of an invitation to attend. Leadership does not assign people to particular groups
FACE-TO-FACE
The relational aspect of small groups is there strength. The communication shared in the closeness that develops within a small group leads to life long friendships.
THREE TO TWELVE
When a group has more than 12 people it is no longer a small group. The dynamics will change. Some people will not become involved. A leader's ability to care for all the people in his/her group
will be compromised. The ideal number in a group is 7. Whenever you have more than seven in a group you should divide into groups of four for Bible Study and Caring times.
REGULAR TIMES
We recommend that our groups meet on a weekly basis. Some types of groups may find it best to meet every second week. But even those groups should meet weekly until they have bonded as a group.
COMMON PURPOSE
The group should periodically discuss:
- Why are we here?
- What do we want to do?
DISCOVERING
Through interaction with one another we will gain a deeper appreciation of our life in Christ. Small Groups are also an invitation to come and find out about life in Christ in a less threatening
environment than they might feel they would encounter in a church setting.
GROWING
Group Life is a place for people to "grow up" becoming "mature and attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." (Ephesians 4:13)
